Head Swim Coach

Our Team:
The St. Cloud Y Swimming Team (STC) is a combined YMCA and USA program that operates out of three short course pools in St. Cloud and surrounding areas. The program offers a supportive atmosphere that emphasizes sound stoke techniques, wet and dry land training sessions and competitive opportunities at every level.  The team was awarded the 2012 MN YMCA Points per CAPita State Champions.  The summer program continues to grow and includes both Division 1 and Division 2 collegiate swimmers.

The Position:

The Head Coach will be involved in every aspect of the program's management, marketing and ongoing development. He/she will be responsible for on-deck coaching of all levels from novice to national groups and masters swim team, managing the administrative operations of the team, meet entries, developing and implementing training programs, leading and developing assistant coaches, and managing parent relations. STC seeks to develop the swimmer as a total person and is seeking a potential career coach who is motivated, enthusiastic and driven to developing talent in accordance with this philosophy.

The Candidate:

  • The ideal candidate will be a high-energy teacher with a high degree of enthusiasm for competitive swimming and a strong background in the sport as a competitor, teacher and/or coach. To apply, you must have or demonstrate the following:
  • Believe in the mission of creating an environment in the greater St Cloud area where any swimmer has the opportunity to achieve personal excellence in the water.
  • The demonstrated ability to collaborate with other swim coaches and want to collaborate with the area high school and college coaches to realize the Y’s aquatic program vision of “Aquatic greatness in Central Minnesota.”
  • A track record of helping swimmers improve.
  • Knowledge of the technical rules of swimming and up-to-date knowledge of USA Swimming and YMCA sanctioned meet standards, as well as requirements for individual swimmer's participation in championship meets.
  • Strong organizational skills, familiarity with state-of-the art swimming technologies (Hy-Tek Meet Manager and Team Manager Software, etc.) and a strong desire to develop as many young swimmers as possible into senior level athletes and to increase the number of athletes who qualify for championship opportunities at the Junior and Senior National levels.
  • Possess a minimum ASCA Level 1 certification (ASCA Level 2 is preferred), but equivalent experience will be considered. A college degree is preferred, but not required.
  • Strong communication and motivation skills with young adults, children and parents, and possess an attitude of inclusion and team building that focuses on the swimmer as a total person.

Swim Instructor

Opportunity to be a part of a fast growing Aquatics program at the St. Cloud Area Family Y.
 
Job Description:
Under the direction of the Aquatics Coordinator the Swimming lesson instructor will conduct classes that comply with the standards of the certification held as well as the Y’s mission and teaching philosophy.

 

Qualifications:

  • Must be 16 years of age or older Must be certified in current CPR-PR, AED, First Aid. WSI or Y certification Preferable.
  • Must be able to demonstrate the four core values of the Y as well as the mission and philosophy of YMCA swimming lessons.
  • A swimming lesson instructor must be able to communicate verbally and project a voice across a pool in loud situations while performing the essential skills of teaching in water that is between 80-90 degrees.
  • Ability to motivate others in the areas of self-awareness and self-confidence through swimming and aquatics.
  • Ability to motivate and effectively communicate with members, parents and students.
  • Exercises mature judgments and sound decision-making.  
  • Ability to effectively communicate information on Y Aquatics and other Y programs.

 

General Functions:

  • Instructs swimming lessons as assigned in accordance with Y guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
  • Develops positive relationships with participants and provides motivational support and guidance.
  • Encourages member and parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
  • Conveys basic information about aquatics programs and schedules and refers members and participants to other programs or staff member.
  • Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.).
  • Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
  • Follows all Y policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures.
  • Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
  • Organizes and puts away needed class equipment.  Reports damaged equipment. Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.

 
Compensation:

  • $8.25 per hour based on experience
  • Must be available to work some Saturdays.

Lifeguard

Job Description:

  • Maintain safe swimming conditions in the pool, on the deck, and surrounding areas.   Positively communicate information on pool rules and Y programs.
  • Education and Experience:
  • Must be 16 years of age or older
  • Current Lifeguarding and CPR/AED for the PR certifications required.
  • Must have the ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness, and possesses mature judgment and sound decision making.
  • Ability to relate to people in a positive, but firm manner must be observant, safety conscious and able to react calmly and quickly in an emergency.
  • Must have the ability to effectively communicate information on aquatics and other Y programs to members and participants.

 
General Functions:

  • Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, on deck and surrounding areas. Prevents accidents by maintaining constant observation of the pool area, enforcing health and safety rules and maintaining emergency readiness.
  • Responds to emergency situations in accordance with Y policies and procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as require.
  • Maintains effective relationships with the members, participants and other staff. Develops rapport with members.
  • Conveys basic information on Y programs and schedules to members, and as appropriate, refers members to other programs and/or staff.
  • Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
  • Takes pool attendance and maintains related records as required.
  • Performs routine maintenance of the pool and surrounding areas, to ensure cleanliness.
  • Checks pool and rescue equipment and promptly reports any problems.
  • Sets up and store equipment for recreational swims and assist instructors with class set up.

 
Compensation:

  • $8.25 per hour based on experience

POSITION:

Supervised Visitation/Exchange Supervisor

Part Time

 

Definition:

The supervisor must have the ability to establish and maintain neutral relationships with parents and children that participate in the Supervised Visitation and Exchange Program. It is the responsibility of the supervisor to provide a safe and nurturing environment within the St. Cloud Area Family YMCA, during which supervised visitations and exchanges take place. The skill to maintain accurate observational behavioral documentation is essential. Knowledge of general community resources and services is beneficial.

 

Distinguishing Characteristics:

A commitment to a high level of professionalism and on-going skill development is required. The supervisor is responsible for creating and maintaining a high quality of services to all clients served through this program. It is essential that supervisors understand and maintain a very high level of confidentiality concerning clients and their cases. It is beneficial for the supervisor to have knowledge in the areas of diversity, domestic violence, sexual abuse, verbal abuse and mental illnesses. Supervisors must be able to read and understand court orders related to visitations, exchanges and orders for protection.

 

This position requires a strong commitment to the mission of the YMCA and the ability to make sound and ethical decisions.

 

Principle Duties:

  • To maintain a professional and neutral relationship with parents, guardians and children involved with supervised visitations and exchanges.
  • To accurately document observation and behaviors during visitations and exchanges.
  • To enforce visitation and exchange center rules.
  • To maintain client case files.
  • To attend staff meetings as scheduled.
  • To report any immediate issues to direct supervisor.
  • To maintain an excellent level of written and verbal communication with supervisor.
  • To perform other duties as assigned by direct supervisor.

 

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

  • Experience working with families and children.
  • Demonstrates good analytical, organizational and time management skills in order to meet and exceed standards.
  • Ability to develop cooperative relationships within the YMCA and the community.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Dedication to maintaining confidentiality of client information.
  • Thorough knowledge of the YMCA mission and values.
  • Thorough understanding of the rules and guidelines of supervised visitation and exchanges.
  • CPR and First Aid training are not required, but recommended.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Preference is given to those who possess post-secondary education or equivalent training or experience in the areas of social work, psychology, sociology, human relations or child and family studies.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English

 

Physical and Mental Demands:

  • Requires the ability to speak, see and hear.
  • Requires frequent movement around the YMCA.
  • Word processing skills.
  • Occasional lifting (i.e. children).
  • Requires the ability to handle unexpected problems that may arise during visitations and exchanges.

Hours: 15-20 hours per week. Two weekends per month required.

Fitness Coach

Fitness coaches are responsible for the activity in the Fitness Center. They provide excellent customer service in a safe, enjoyable and positive atmosphere that promotes member wellness in accordance with Y policies and procedures.


Job functions

  • Conduct fitness coaching sessions with members, including intake session, goal setting, introduction to equipment, exercise plan, etc.
  • Build relationships with members and connect them to the Y.
  • Communicate and enforce policies and guidelines for the Fitness Center along with keeping this area safe, clean and functional.
  • Adhere to all Y guidelines and expectations.

 

This position reports to the health & wellness director.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in (or working toward) Health/Exercise Science or related field
  • CPR/First Aid/AED and Oxygen
  • Excellent customer service and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work with all age groups and ability levels


Physical demands

  • Perform all aspects of the position, including but not limited to walking, standing for long periods of time, bending and reaching.
  • The ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Group Exercise Instructor

Under the direction of the fitness director, the group exercise instructor is responsible for teaching group exercise classes, such as Cycling, Step, Pilates, High/Low impact, Kickboxing and/or Strength/Toning. It is important this department remains current and addresses the daily issues directly and indirectly impacting the physical mental and spiritual health of the individual or family.

 

Job functions

  • Give direct leadership and instruction to fitness classes (this is not your workout; this is for our members!)
  • Provide safe and effective workouts for the general population, for health seekers and the advanced.
  • Interact with members before/after each class and obtain member input for future classes.
  • Encourage member participation in other group fitness classes.
  • Keep the studio clean, assuring all equipment is put away in the proper place at the end of each class.
  • Be responsible for all scheduled classes and, if necessary, follow the appropriate substitution procedures.
  • Keep all certifications and skills current.


Qualifications

  • High school diploma (or GED equivalent) required.
  • Experience and/or knowledge in teaching group exercise classes.
  • Nationally recognized Group Exercise Certification such as YMCA of the USA, ACE, AFAA, ACSM or NETA.
  • College degree or be working towards a B.S. or B.A. in a health related field preferred.
  • CPR/First Aid/AED and Oxygen
  • Excellent customer service and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work with all age groups and ability levels

Personal Trainer

The personal trainer is responsible for planning and leading a range of individualized or group exercise/activity sessions for clients in a fitness specialty area. The incumbent performs a variety of fitness programs that are both educational and motivational. She or he provides customer service which promotes member wellness in accordance with the Y policies and procedures and creates a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment.


Job functions

  • Instruct a variety of individualized or group exercise/activity sessions for members.
  • Administer and evaluate health history questionnaires and other pre-participation documentation with regard to individual exercise programs. Administer and interpret health/fitness assessments. Track client progress and maintain appropriate documentation in participant files.
  • Instruct individual clients/small groups in proper exercise technique and use of equipment. Develop and implement individualized exercise programs including cardiovascular, resistance training, flexibility, balance/stability, and postural components that provide optimum results for the client. Provide encouragement and support for the client and recognize the client's strengths and weaknesses.
  • Adhere to all guidelines and expectations as outlined by director.
  • Maintain required CECs and national certifications.
  • Perform Fitness Center staff duties when not scheduled for personal training or fitness instruction classes.

 

Qualifications

  • Formal training in the specialty class being taught and/or ability to demonstrate the movements and exercises recommended.
  • Four-year or two-year degree in health/exercise science or related field and/or equivalent knowledge related to fitness, exercise physiology, or health and wellness.
  • Nationally Accredited Personal Training Certification such as the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), American Council on Exercise (ACE), National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), or National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), WaterArt ® Aquatic Personal Training Specialist Certification, or other approved and accredited certifications.
  • Certifications required within 30 days of hire: CPR/PR, First Aid, AED, and Oxygen.
  • Must hold appropriate certification/ training in area(s) of specialty programming; i.e., TRX, Yoga, etc.
  • Demonstrated customer service skills and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead an individual/class and motivate others to achieve their fitness goals.
  • Demonstrated ability working with all age groups and ability levels.
  • Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations.
  • Prefer 1 year experience in specialty format being taught.
  • Prefer 6 months experience in fitness instruction and/or personal training.
  • Prefer National Certification in Group Fitness and Personal Training.

Member Service Associate

Provide superior service and promote the Y to current and prospective members.


Job functions

  • Exceed members’ expectations with fast and knowledgeable service; handle all questions and concerns in a courteous, professional manner.
  • Greet and become familiar with program participants and members by name.
  • Recognize member departures with a friendly salutation (“have a good day” etc.).
  •  Review electronic notes in the Y software (DAXCO) and respond accordingly.
  • Review the department communications binder prior to each shift.
  • Develop comprehensive knowledge of all programs and facility.
  • Maintain a neat and professional appearance.
  •  Assist periodically with membership retention activities (reminder calls, expired credit card calls, bounced payment calls, etc.).
  • Sell the Y’s value as a not-for-profit, family-oriented wellness center and attend mandatory staff meetings.

 

Qualifications

  • One year of experience in customer service and/or sales and handling money.
  • Accuracy and ability to learn and follow complex registration procedures.
  • Handle member requests with friendly promptness.
  • Experience and proficiency with computers and capacity for critical thinking.
  • Must have some post-secondary education (or equivalent work experience)
  • Must be at least 19 years of age
  • Must have reliable means of transportation (the Y is on the bus line).
  • Ability to take initiative on projects and tasks
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people
  • Ability to work accurately in a fast-pace environment
  • Strong communication, people, and multi-tasking skills

 

Physical demands

  • Visual, auditory, and verbal ability to communicate effectively with people and monitor property and activity.
  • Ability to perform light physical tasks
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 35 pounds.

 

Wages: $7.25-$9.00 based on experience.  
Hours: Minimum 15 hours per week, including weekends (we will schedule around school schedules)
